FAISAL MASJID (Faisal Mosque)
The Faisal Masjid (Mosque) is the largest Mosque of Pakistan and also of South Asia. It was the largest Mosque in the world from 1986 to 1993. From then the Hassan ll Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco. According to subsequent expansions after Masjid-al-Haram of Makkah and Masjid-al-Nabvi, Faisal Masjid came at the fourth number all over the world in 1996.
Faisal Mosque is conceived as the National Mosque of Pakistan. It has covered area of 5000 Meter square (54,000 sq. ft. ). It can accommodate 74'000 worshipers in its main hall and approx. 200,000 in its adjoining grounds.
The Faisal Masjid is named after the late King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz of Saudia Arabia, who supported and financed the project. The impetus of the Masjid was given in 1966 by the late King Faisal Bin Abdul Aziz and the initiative support to build a National Masjid in Islamabad during his official visit to Pakistan. The design of this Masjid was chosen of Turkish Artist Vedat Dalokay from the international competition held in 1969 in which 17 countries submitted 43 proposals. Its construction cost is approx. 120 Million USD Dollars.
